From the President 4th November 2015
  • Thank you to the Bunnings BBQ crew. It was very busy and successful, raising $1003.  Special thanks to Bob for his huge effort in assembling all the equipment and food and for returning for the clean and pack up. Thank you to Greg also for coming at the start and end of the day to set and pack up.
  • Youth night – 18th November. This is a special event being organised by Greg, Ken and John at which we will host Rotary Exchange students. It will be a Partner’s Night, so remember to apologise if your partner will not be in attendance. Greg has requested Australian nibbles to be brought – please let him know what you are able to contribute ( Pam has already offered Anzac biscuits)
  • Next week, 11th November – Club Visioning. This is a special meeting chaired by PDG Cathy Roth and DG Jane Cox and will seek to set some direction and goals for the next few years. The meeting will commence at 5.30pm and be about 4 hours. Please come with your ideas and be willing to ‘work’ and contribute to discussions.
  • Our guest speaker was unable to attend, so I organised to watch the Dateline episode -  Vaccination Vigilantes Fighting polio and the Taliban.
“The programme highlighted the volunteers dispensing polio vaccine, the problems they face with resistance due in part to Taliban propaganda saying the vaccine was contaminated and would harm the children.   Nearly 80 volunteers dispensing polio vaccine have been murdered by the Taliban.   Other families whose children had contracted polio were featured.
One Rotarian reports -it was quite confronting to see volunteers wearing Rotary blue & gold vests, and with coolers/Eskys marked with Rotary emblems, trying to justify polio vaccine.”
Since the episode was screened Nigeria has been declared free of the wild poliovirus. To date in 2015, Pakistan and Afghanistan are the last remaining countries where polio is endemic. They have had 38 and 13 cases respectively in 2015. With our global partners – we are winning the war on polio!.
  • Please keep our members who are unwell in your thoughts and prayers – especially Joe
Have a good week smiley
