All in attendance last night enjoyed a lovely meal and enlightening address by our guest speakers – Emma Dukka and Wendy Norris from the Torquay chapter of Days for Girls. We also welcomed Jacqui Berris who is also involved as it is a joint project with the Salvation Army. Both speakers had a connection with Rotary – Emma, a former exchange student and Wendy sponsored by Rotary for an Alma Doepel experience. More about the girl’s presentation later. The Emma and Wendy were delighted to receive a cheque for $1000 for their cause, which had been approved by the Board back in April.
I had received an offer of 3 weekday BBQ spots at Bunnings Waurnponds – Friday October 30th, Friday 27th November and Wednesday 30th December. Those present agreed to accept the offer – so please put these dates in your diary, we’ll need all hands on deck.
On BBQ’s, have had a request to ‘man’ the BBQ at the Grovedale Primary School fair on Friday 6th November, 4 – 8 pm. We provide only our marquee and people. This will be a great opportunity for PR, so again, please put this date in your diary.
Next week we have Club Assembly and Board – please come along with your ideas to help your Director formulate our priorities for this year and prior to ……
The DG’s visit on the 9th September. This will be a partner’s night so please remember let the attendance officer (whoever it may be!) or Rice village know if your partner will not be coming. At Jan’s suggestion, we’ll make Spring the theme for this night so let’s cast aside those dreary winter clothes and celebrate the return of sunshine, and warmth!
There will be a Board meeting with DG Jane Cox at 5.00pm prior to our meeting on the 9th. All Board members are invited, but please let me know if you are unable to attend.
Instead of heading north to warmer climes, Joe and Don are heading north to the cold. Enjoy your skiing holidays Joe and Don, but please take care – no broken bones please! And we wish Trish Carlyle a full recovery from her broken bones.
Wendy and Emma spoke about Days for Girls, Every Girl, Everywhere, Period.
Both the girls we very passionate about the cause and spoke in depth about the problems and shame associated with the menstrual cycle for girls and women in third world countries and on how isolated, vulnerable and discriminated they were in their own society. Sisters of the Surfcoast in conjunction with the Salvation Army and various other organizations were trying to assist girls and women in these situations. Days for Girls have provided various hygienic products in a specially designed bag that includes cloth pad, soap, two pairs of knickers, face washers and a zip lock bag to keep all of the above in. They also provide three different sizes.
So far the girls have taken their product to Indonesia, Fiji, Vietnam, Thailand and Tibet with the help of many schools and the scout association. They were also currently looking at ways to distribute to communities within Australia that require assistance.
President Lesley thanked the girls and presented them with a cheque for $1000. The girls were very appreciative and said the $1000 would go a long way in helping to obtain new equipment to make the pads.
Remember the Dinner Auction Friday 9th of October 2015. At $70 a head, this is a bargain, get your table organized now.
Remember this is a major fund raiser for the club so get your tables organized and get your sponsors and donations into Paul D as soon as possible so as Paul can know where we are at.
This is our new page for upcoming BBQ's and any news and or pictures on our BBQ's. Keep in mind the BBQ's form a huge part of our fundraising and are also a great get together socially for a bit of banter and fun, so get your friends, family members and others along to help out and have a great time while raising funds.
Remember ALDI is usually the third Saturday of every month.

I represent the Lions Club of Corio Norlane and would be grateful if you can read the information below and consider placing it in your newsletters, on your facebook pages or on your websites. We have 3 projects running at present all for Geelong communities and beyond. 1st is a Winter Blanket Appeal that will run until 30 th September, Businesses as well as Organizations and individuals can get involved by having a sleep over, sleep in or just bring a blanket day or just donating items that are sitting unused. We will accept Clean blankets, doonas, sleeping bags, sheets, quilts or cushions. 2nd is an ongoing Bike Project that we would encourage individuals or businesses to donate any unused bicycles that they may have, we will repair them and donate them to children who will enjoy a bike. If you are needing a bike, get in contact and we will see what we can do. 3rd is an ongoing Computer Project, where we would encourage any business that is looking to recycle their old computer systems to contact us and we will take them off your hands. We test, repair, upgrade and then donate them to families in need of this help. Any family that may be deserving of this service please get them to contact us. Two unhappy Cats supporters were seen trudging towards Richmond station about 10.30pm on Friday night lamenting what might have been! One of the unhappy Cats supporters will be taking up a new position with Eddie Airlines at Avalon International Airport when he retires from his current vocation! Will keep you posted!
